In the end we stayed in the harbor at Siracusa until the following Thursday. There were a few days where it was too windy to get off the boat, a couple of days hiking around town seeing the sites and soaking up the atmosphere, a day of refueling (using fuel cans and the dinghy), and a mission to track down soda stream gas and syrups. (The soda stream really cuts back on plastic use and space, but the supplies which had been plentiful in the other countries we had visited had been elusive thus far in Sicily.) There was 1 really nice sunny day that was a taste of the summery weather we were hoping for, but mostly it was cool and breezy with cloudy sky’s.
Siracusa had a lot going for it. We enjoyed the colorful local market and the many ornate churches and piazza’s. Athena’s fountain was fantastic, and the Fort at the harbor entrance was well preserved and had an amusing sign posted.
We couldn’t figure out exactly what the sign meant but we successfully fought the urge to “up and side” anyway!
