2020 SEASON 5 : A little About Montenegro

Montenegro is also known as Crna Gora and translates to “Black Mountain”. The country is located in southeast Europe, on the Adriatic coast of the Balkans. Montenegro borders Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north, Serbia and Kosovo to the east, Albania to the southeast, and Croatia to the west. The largest city is Podgorica, while Cetinje is the old royal capital. The land area is comparable to Connecticut with a total area of 13,812 sq km, and a population around 622,359 people (est 2018). They drive on the Right side.

Following the independence referendum held in May 2006 Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia, and the confederation peacefully dissolved.

The Government of Montenegro is a “Unitary parliamentary constitutional republic”. In 2020 the current President is Milo Dukanovic, and he serves as head of state. The current Prime Minister Dusko Markovic, is the head of the Government. The President of Parliament is Aleksa Becic, and he is the presiding officer of the Parliament of Montenegro, and serves as acting President of Montenegro if the elected President vacates the office before the end of the 5-year term.

The currency is the Euro and the World Bank classified Montenegro as an upper middle-income country. The biggest industries (2016 EST) are; Agriculture 7.5%, Industry 15.9%, Services 76.6%

Montenegro is a member of the UN, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and the Central European Free Trade Agreement. Montenegro is a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean. It is also in the process of joining the European Union.

Some typical Montenegrin proverbs show a pretty relaxed approach to life. “Love they bed as you love they own self”, and this other favorite: “If at anytime you are gripped by a strong urge to work, sit down, be quiet, wait, and in due course it will pass”. (I guess it’s fortunate that we won’t be needing a lot of outside help for our remaining boat jobs! Certainly the marina staff have been very helpful and on the ball, so maybe it’s an attitude that’s not so prevelant anymore!)
