Season seven

2022 SEPTEMBER…MALLORCA TO IBIZA

Sandy Bottoms and Clear Water in The Balearics

After a lovely sail out of Alcudia Bay, we switched to the small kite and meandered halfway down the coast again towards Palma. It was good to anchor in the clear water and enjoy swims after a day “pulling the strings”.

The following day it was a motorsail to our jumping off point for Ibiza at Playa de Rapita.

Ibiza and Formentera were 70 nautical miles or so from Rapita, and there were thunderstorms expected in the afternoon and evening….No wind though. It’s one of those weird things in this area where the thunderstorms form up and unleash rain, thunder, and lightening, but ( so far this month) very little wind.

We arrived at the pass of Freu Mediano between Ibiza and Formentera around 5 pm. It was a very busy stretch of water with high speed passenger ferries, slow car ferries, power boats, and sail boats all transiting Freu Grande and Freu Mediano. It’s pretty shallow at 14 feet so nobody strayed too far from the channel.

Fresh Bread Delivery to The Anchorage at Cala Yondal Perhaps?

It was about 40 minutes around to the anchorage at Cala Yondal (Des Jondal) and we were happy to find a spot to anchor for the night. It was pretty crowded but everyone did a good job of finding a home without being on top of each other.

The light show started at 2 am and thunder, lightening, and rain carried on until around 7.30 am. The boat got another bonus wash, and the rig shed the last of the red dust.

There were still thunder clouds around when we left the next morning, and we actually saw a big water spout in the distance which seemed to hang around for ages.

Thunderclouds at Sunset on Passage to Cartagena

The overnight passage to Cartagena was pretty calm. Todd caught and released 2 small tuna in the afternoon, and after dark the commercial boat traffic stayed in the shipping lanes.

We arrived around 9 am and were soon tied up and checked in….and apparently we were just in time for the big fiesta that night!
