2022 NOVEMBER…A Few Sights Around Playa Blanca

The Canaries….Palm’s, Cactus, Blue Sky, Volcanic Rock, and White Buildings

Lanzarote Island has a stark and seemingly barren landscape. All along the shoreline you see bright white buildings.

The short-ish four hour plane ride from England, and year round mild weather and clear waters, make it a favorite holiday destination. It’s also a training area for athletes and sailors.

The first weekend we were here, there was an Optimist sailing regatta. The sailors looked to be from the ages of 6 to 13 years old. It was fun to watch them organize on the dock and come and go every day. A few missed the side of the boat by inches!

Since then we’ve seen Olympic Windsurfers on foiling boards, Nacra catamarans, Lasers, and a couple of 49ers.

Timanfaya Volcano Park

The park at Timanfaya was about 35 minutes from Playa Blanca. The roads on the island are amazingly smooth compared to the rough terrain on either side. Once you enter the park it’s a short drive up to the visitors center.

The Steam Geyser Above, Volancic Chicken Below

One of the attractions was a “Steam Geyser” that a park ranger created. They poured a bucket of water down a small vent and almost immediately, it turned to steam and shot a geyser 30 feet up into the air with an impressive roar!

Another attraction was chicken cooked over a larger, open vent, which was available for purchase at the restaurant. There was also an open vent that the rangers dropped dry brush into, which promptly burst into flame and disintegrated. Pretty good job for a pyromaniac!

The East side of the island was really windswept and the last of a big ocean swell was crashing against the coastline during our visit.

On the way back to the boat, we stopped to check out the salt flats which were still operational.

Salt Flats Lanzarote

Our parts for the solar/battery upgrade have been delayed, ( the boat delivering it hit something and lost it’s rudders), so we’ll have time for more sight seeing.

We hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!
