Season Eight

NOVEMBER 2023…PREPPING FOR A WINTER IN THE BAHAMAS

Fall Colors Brunswick Landing Marina, Georgia

It’s the day after Thanksgiving and we’re making turkey soup and lists for a Costco run.

The Fall has seen a flurry of activity aboard Right Meow as the temperatures and humidity finally dropped. There’s been a big improvement in the height of the waterline as we’ve finally gotten all the surplus parts and gear off, including the 80# Rocna anchor.

We had a storage unit over hurricane season that helped with reorganizing and made access to stowage and sorting much easier. There were only a couple of items we’d forgotten we’d squirreled away, like a mount and board for holding a leg of Iberico ham! Speaking of good eats, we had some of the best fresh shrimp we’ve ever had from a local fisherman. The boat’s name was Gravedigger, and the Captains wife ran the shop.

The big upgrades for this season were the addition of Starlink, a dometic portable fridge/freezer, a new stack pack for the main sail, and two new trampolines. There was also a portable AC unit that we used when we were aboard, from mid-July through mid-October, and the addition of an 800W inverter to top-up batteries with shore power on grey days.

The immediate plan is to head down to Scorpion Marine at Cape Canaveral for a haulout and bottom paint. This time of year, the weather hasn’t quite settled into the winter patterns yet, so we’ll try and leave the first day in December with favorable conditions.

After final provisioning for fresh goods, we’ll head to the Bahamas. The Gulf Stream will push us North again, so we’ll clear in either up at the Westend or Spanish Cay. We’ll see what happens eh!
