Sicily is a very productive agricultural region and there were farms and fields everywhere. The place we went on the Sunday after pasta making, was a buffalo farm specializing in buffalo cheeses and meats. This was a popular Sunday activity and we were able to get the last seats for the 3 pm sitting. (This worked out well as it meant a productive day of boat jobs before the post-lunch lethargy set in).
We had a wander around the buffalo paddock and corrals before getting seated, admiring the views and gardens. The lunch itself was a fixed menu and started with olives, buffalo salami, fresh tomato salad, buffalo provolone, and a massive braided loaf of buffalo mozzarella. Next was pizza with an aged buffalo cheese, and baked/breaded mozzarella balls. Then came stewed buffalo (amazing flavors), thin seared buffalo steaks and crispy roast potato’s. Lastly a desert of mini cannoli’s with buffalo ricotta and lemon, small chocolate filled bigne, and freshly picked oranges..with lots of red wine. I don’t think anyone was hungry for the next few days!
