Season seven

APRIL 2023…GOODBYE ANTIGUA, HELLO BARBUDA!

Leaving Nonsuch Bay

After a last few days of Wing Foiling in Nonsuch Bay, we headed for Barbuda using the more northern pass. We had to wait until the sun was high enough to make it easier to see the gap in the reef.

The Waves Breaking on The Reef Also Made it Easier to Avoid

The trip over was a brisk sail in 17 – 22 knots of breeze, and took about 3.5 hours. It was our first passage where sea depths were mostly under 100 feet.

Barbuda is a flat island and home to a large frigate bird colony. It was evacuated back when hurricane Irma struck the island and has been slowly rebuilding. We were told that 1600 permanent residents have returned, and tourism has resumed. For more information, go to https://barbudaful.net/

The island has ferry service from Antigua, bringing tourists to enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches, dive, snorkeling, and heritage sites, and to enjoy the unpopulated acres.

Looking Across The Anchorage Behind The Reef at Cocoa Point

We visited Inoch at his Shaka Kai Beach hut, and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, and a delicious grilled Lobster lunch.

Barbuda was a short two night stop to get a beach walk in, visit Inoch, and sort out our clearing out paperwork. We would have liked to stay longer, and we’ll pencil it in for next season. For now, the weather is pressing, so we are heading on to St Martin’s before the storms, and to get cleared in before Easter holiday closures.

  1. Christine says:

Love the pic of the desolate beach! There’s something so beautiful about minimalist scenery …
    Thank you Virginia.
