APRIL 2023… IN AND OUT OF TURKS AND CAICOS AND UP TO GEORGETOWN

Cockburn Town South Caicos, Turks and Caicos

We left on Friday with the tentative plan to head directly for the southern Exumas.  It was mostly motor sailing against current, so after 3 nights at sea we decided to make a stop at South Caicos Island. Todd got us cleared in and out, which he reported as being reminiscent of Mexico in the 90’s, and we topped up fuel before heading on to Georgetown.

We had some lumpy and gusty conditions,  thunderstorms that managed to miss us, occasional shipping traffic, and gorgeous stars. The Sargassum weed thinned out finally, and we caught a couple of Dorado. Oh, our port saildrive also caught a large canvas bale/bag which caused a temporary slow down and a lot of vibration. The sail drive seemed OK though, and we were able to continue.

The Cause of The Vibration and Sudden Slow Down

The Exumas and most of the Bahamas are very low-lying  islands ringed with reefs and sand. It’s best to time your arrival to get through the cuts when the light and tide are favorable.

Entry Cut to Elizabeth Harbor Little Exuma

After waiting 45 minutes for the light to improve, we entered the North Rocks channel and navigated into Elizabeth Harbor, with the main port of Georgetown.

This is one of those cruiser destinations with plenty of anchoring options and a good number of services. We met some folks who spent 3 months in the area for their winter break, while others like us were just passing through on their way north or south. As usual, Todd ran into folks who had mutual friends on the West Coast. It was a good stop to get caught up on sleep and enjoy some socializing.
